Our Purpose

The Ascot Project is volunteer-led and exists to improve the quality of life of older people in the Ascot area.  It builds upon the excellent work that is already in place from a wide range of voluntary organisations.

Our work programme for 2008

1. We will continue with our highly popular weekly shopping trips.  These provide a valuable support to older people who would otherwise be unable to get to the shops.  Occasionally, we also run longer more sociable outings.  Our minibus is regularly full and we are now considering whether we can find the resources and manpower to run more trips than are currently possible.

2. Golden Age V took place on 20th August 2008 at the Pavilion at Ascot racecourse.  This retirement fair, running for the fifth year, brought together local agencies that work with older people in the Ascot area, providing information about health, wealth and fun for the over 50s.  Nearly 50 stands were present and attendance exceeded 300.  Activities included line dancing, tai chi, chair-based exercise and ballroom dancing.

3. Now in its seventh year, The Ascot Project needs to establish more formal arrangements.  As part of that process, we have scheduled our first ever AGM for Wednesday 1st October at Ascot Racecourse (possibly combined with a fish and chip supper).

We recognise that it is some time now since The Ascot Project Panel met and we want to use that event to redefine our objectives for the next few years.  Our initial focus groups identified transport, information, community support and leisure.  We have made good progress against these headings, most notably through our annual retirement fairs, weekly shopping trips, Any Questions events, Tai Chi and information gathering activities.  But we now wish to refresh our thinking together with the local community.

It is remarkable that just about everyone who started with our steering group is still actively working on behalf of The Ascot Project.  Our thanks go to Stephanie Marney, Margaret Simmons-Hodge, Marjorie Smalley, Mary Nicholls and David Hilton (our chairman).  But we are also hoping to use the AGM to recruit more volunteers to contribute some of their valuable time to The Ascot Project.

4. Finally our thanks go to all of the organisations who support us financially (Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead, Ascot Fire Brigade Trust, Windsor Housing Association, Tick Tock, Berkshire Community Foundation) as well as the many individuals who make donations to us.
